In the News: GFM Youth Thoughts on Lapse App

October 13, 2023

Recently, a new photo-sharing app named Lapse was released. Here’s what our GFM leaders have to say about it.

What you need to know

  • Lapse combines the concept of disposable camera with social media. Once a user takes a photo on their phone, they must wait for it to “develop” before they can share or archive the photo.

  • Lapse uses a unique invite-only approach, where users need to invite 5 other friends in order to join.

  • The platform aims to promote authenticity on social media: all photos are unedited and there is no option to “Like” others’ posts.

Our gut reactions:

  • The idea of taking disposable photos on your phone is cool; photos are aesthetic :)

  • The app requires extensive sign-up and notifications (inviting friends, adding widget to lock screen). This may be discouraging for people looking to enforce boundaries with screen time.

  • The website says there is a waitlist to join the app: is there really a demand or is this a marketing ploy?

We think it’s headed in the…

  • Right direction

  • Wrong direction

  • Too soon to tell

What to look out for:

  • Will Lapse become a space for authentic sharing and connecting? We’ll see…
