Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping healthcare, education, jobs, and online information, but many AI systems still overlook LGBTQ experiences. According to the GLAAD new AI report, this can lead to biased information, discrimination, privacy risks, and the suppression of LGBTQ voices. The report calls on companies to build more inclusive AI through better training data, stronger privacy protections, human oversight, and collaboration with LGBTQ experts.
Our gut reactions:
It’s great to see more research focused on representing diverse communities and addressing the needs of LGBTQ individuals. Additionally, it would also be important to acknowledge accessibility for people with disabilities.
It’s concerning that AI bias can create invisible barriers in healthcare, housing, employment, and other opportunities.
Because younger people are both more likely to identify as LGBTQ and more likely to use AI regularly, these biases could disproportionately affect the generation that relies on AI the most.
As AI evolves from chatbots to autonomous agents, stronger oversight and safeguards are increasingly important. We believe that the time to control these concerns and issues is now.
