In the News: Meta’s Muse Image Spark
August 19, 2026
What you need to know:
Meta recently released a new Instagram feature called Muse Image that allowed users to generate AI images from other people’s public posts. Although the feature was intended to encourage creativity, it quickly received backlash over privacy and consent concerns, leading Meta to remove it.
Our gut reactions:
We were surprised to see that Meta created this feature, as it raised concerns about using other people’s images without consent.
This controversy reminded us of a similar event with Grok AI, as both involved issues with AI safety and privacy.
It is concerning how the feature was turned on for everyone with public accounts, rather than giving users the ability to decide whether they want it or not.
We agree with social media consultant Sarah Whittle’s point that while it’s good the feature was removed after public backlash, the larger issue remains. Public content can still be used by other AI tools, making privacy and consent ongoing concerns.
We believe that it’s good that people spoke out about their concerns and that Meta responded by removing the feature.
We think it’s headed in the…
Right direction
Wrong direction
Too soon to tell
What to look out for:
Is the platform being transparent about how the AI was trained and what data it uses?
What safeguards are in place to prevent misuse, impersonation, or harmful AI-generated images?
Will AI image generation become a standard feature across social media platforms?
