In the News: Meta CEO Defends Platform in Lawsuit Over Youth Mental Health
February 25, 2026
What you need to know:
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently testified in a lawsuit against Meta and Google that claims their platforms are addictive and harmful to young users’ mental health. During his testimony, Zuckerberg defended Meta and the decisions the company has made about its platforms and policies.
Our gut reactions:
It was disappointing to hear him say that people can simply go elsewhere if they don’t feel comfortable on the app. That feels like a massive oversimplification of the issue. If it were that simple, we wouldn’t need to be having these conversations.
Some people may not even realize they are being harmed by the communities they are part of online.
Our initial reaction is annoyance. It felt like he was defending the company by placing the blame on users instead of the platform.
Saying filters aren’t recommended but are available if users want them shifts responsibility for potential harms onto individuals rather than the platform.
It was also disturbing to hear that Meta knew some users were lying about their age, but said enforcing age rules is difficult and didn’t describe stronger efforts to combat it.
Meta wanted more kids on the app - they were not only aware of it but wanted more and are always trying to increase who uses their app.
We think it’s headed in the…
Right direction
Wrong direction
Too soon to tell
What to look out for:
Could this case lead to changes in Section 230 protections or increase accountability for social media platforms?
Even if Meta or YouTube face penalties, will it actually be enough to change the whole industry and create industry standards? Or will the problem just go in a circle and recur at a different company?
If platforms are found liable, it could open the door to additional lawsuits and potentially billions of dollars in damages.
